Mythbuster: 10 Myths About Gay Marriage Debunked #9

No.9 in our top 10 myths about gay marriage….

Myth: Marriage was created to control couples having children, and since having children is biologically impossible between a gay or lesbian couple, same-sex marriage is not necessary.

Bust: Many opponents of gay-marriage say that the only reason marriage has existed in civilisation, is to socially regulate the obligations and responsibilities attendant upon procreation. This however, is an outdated argument, since gay and lesbian couples can obtain the responsibility of raising children, through surrogate mothers, adoption or artificial insemination.

By this rationale it would appear that both older couples or heterosexual couples who discover that they are unable to have children, should have the option of marriage closed off to them.
