Mythbuster: 10 Myths About Gay Marriage Debunked #5

Here’s myth No.5 in our top 10 myths about gay marriage.

Myth: This isn’t about equality because a civil partnership already gives gay people rights

Bust: By denying gay and lesbian people the right to marry in a place of worship that is happy to wed them, and to call their life-time commitment by every name except marriage entrenches in law the idea that gay and lesbian people are inherently different and inferior.

Moreover, by maintaining that the institution of marriage is there to protect children whilst labelling same-sex marriage and parenting a threat to them, reinforces the stereotype that gays and lesbians are incapable of forming long-term loving relationships and that gays and lesbians are not good parents.

It is also important to many gay and lesbian Christian people to be married in a church and to have their partnership officially recognised as a marriage.
